The bright red and yellow 13th Field Artillery Brigade insignia is an iconic design seen in the Italian campaigns.
Wire attached to the rear of the helmet, perhaps to hang it up somewhere.
Schertzer's laundry number inside an early helmet liner fitted with rayon webbing, often associated with those who enlisted early in the war, or in Tec/5 Schertzer's case, pre-World War II.
The 13th Field Artillery Brigade fell under the US Army's II Corps command, and as such, 13th FAB Helmets were painted with II Corps Insignia.
Remnants of 13th FAB insignia on the liner, perhaps removed when Tec/5 Schertzer left the unit.
